Miami City Ballet
Slaughter on 10th Avenue
Balanchine’s sassy and spirited Slaughter on Tenth Avenue and Richard Rodgers’ tantalizing Broadway score open the season with a bang in a 1930s speakeasy. It’s a hilarious parody of hijinks and high kicks, gangsters and cops, in this ballet about the tap dancer and the impossible stripper he falls in love with. But watch out – her jealous boyfriend is the brutal Big Boss, and he’s hiding in the theater waiting for the moment to pull the trigger on the hoofer… will the police nab him in time? George Segal
Thanks to a recent grant received through the Bank of America Art Conservation Project, George Segal’s Abraham’s Farewell to Ishmael (1987) is on view for the first time since a complete restoration. Segal first began making plaster casts from live models in 1961 and was known for his figurative sculptures throughout his career. The hyperrealism of these works renders the figures familiar and emotionally resonant. November 22, 2019 – July 6, 2020; pamm.org

Lara Favaretto: Blind Spot
Favaretto embraces the idea of constant change, creating works of art and situations that are in flux. Though often humorous and playful, her works address more serious matters such as decay, consumption and loss. Using elements like obsolete technologies to subtly refer to the passing of time, Favaretto incorporates found materials that are repurposed in her work. Highlights from Blind Spot will include Favaretto’s interactive installation Momentary Monument – The Library (2012-2019), a bookcase displaying 2,200 donated books containing folded images from the artist’s archive, printed onto a sheet of mould-made paper.
