Holiday weight gain is real. New research from Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab, has discovered that participants’ weight began to rise throughout October and November, and peaked ten days after Christmas. The change wasn’t large, but it was significant: on average, people’s weight increased about 1.3 pounds during the Christmas-New Year’s season. What’s more, the study showed that the extra pounds they put on between Halloween and Christmas can take more than five months to lose.
For some people, about half of that weight came off quickly after the holiday season ended, but the other half wasn’t lost until about five months later, after Easter. However, most people don’t ever lose the pound of weight they put on during the holidays, according to a report in “The New England Journal of Medicine.” Since the average weight gain during adulthood is about one-to-two pounds per year, that means much of midlife weight gain can be explained by holiday eating.
For people who are already overweight, the holiday weight news is worse. Although the average gain is only one pound, people who are already overweight tend to gain a lot more. Researchers at the University of Oklahoma found that overweight people gained five pounds or more during the holidays.
