Day 10 of 2014 FIFA World Cup saw groups G and F start their second round of games with Argentina v Iran, Germany v Ghana, and Nigeria v Bosnia.
Group F kicked off with Argentina facing what everyone thought would be a weak Iran but that wasn’t the case as Iran sat back and dedicated themselves to defending with all 11 men against Leo Messi and the rest of Argentina. What this produced was an annoyingly boring 45 minutes of Argentina attempting to break through but struggling as Iran parked the bus with an 8-1-1 formation. The second half saw Iran start to attack and they became a threat. Producing scary chances that were only stopped by Argentina’s goalkeeper, Argentina proved they had become used to Iran’s defending and lack of attacking. But Argentina came close too however they failed to break through as the 90′ rolled around everyone begun talking about the standings as Iran came out with a second draw, but during that conversation Leo Messi had decided Argentina would win and with one final minute left and one last blow, Messi cannoned the ball towards the goal with an impossible curve that beat the hands of Iran’s goalkeeper to give Argentina the 1-0 win.
Group G started with Germany against Ghana. On paper it seemed like an easy match for Germany but after the first half it had become clear that it would not be. Germany drew first blood at the 51′ but Ghana quickly came back at the 54′ to keep the game 1-1. Then at the 63′ Ghana would take the lead against Germany and as the 70′ came, the situation looked scary for Germany as Ghana did not stop attacking, however at 71′ good positioning in a corner gave Germany their second goal to tie the game 2-2. Germany had not been able to copy the results of their previous game and were unable to do what the United States had done a week earlier.
Group F concluded with Nigeria and Bosnia, both teams looking for a win in order to stay in the running. Bosnia struck the first goal but was denied their goal by the referees calling an offside rule that did not exist. Following the call, Emmanuel Emenike crossed the ball into the box for Peter Odemwingie who tipped it into the net for the only goal of the match as the Bosnians got distracted asking for a foul. Nigeria with one goal eliminated Bosnia in their first trip to the world cup in what should have been a 1-1 and maybe even a 1-0 win for Nigeria as the foul Bosnia asked for seemed like it existed.
Next games see Group G finish it’s second round and Group H.
