Groups H and G finished up their second round of games as day 11 of the 2014 FIFA World Cup came to a close with Belgium v Russia, Korea v Algeria, and USA v Portugal.
Belgium faced off with Russia in a tight and seldom entertaining 90 minutes that saw little action and only one goal late into the second half. It wasn’t until the 88′ that Belgium was able to net a goal after creating multiple chances that didn’t quite have the spark to give the Belgium national team the lead. The game finished 1-0 leaving Belgium at the top of their group.
Algeria then played Korea in a game that seemed to be heading towards a 6-0 after Algeria scored three goals in the first half leaving the Koreans scratching their heads for answers. However Korea came back and scored in the 50′ to give the Koreans hope. The fire would be tamed as Algeria scored their fourth goal in the 62′ giving the Algerians a three goal advantage. Korea would strike back ten minutes later and leave the final score line 4-2 in favor of Algeria leaving them second in the group behind Belgium.
The day would end with an intense match up between Portugal and The United States. The game was crucial for both teams as USA needed a draw to stay at the top of the group and Portugal needed a win in hopes of surviving. Portugal struck first as the American defense failed to clear a Portuguese ball, leading Nani to easily net the ball past a fallen Tim Howard. The goal left the half 1-0 in favor of CR7 Portugal. In the 64′ Jermaine Jones would net USA’s first goal with a beautiful long range strike that left the Portuguese defense stunned. The United States kept attack and found their second goal in the 81′ after a cross into the box and a controlled effort by Clint Dempsey. It seemed as though USA would win the game and eliminate Portugal but at the 90+5′ CR7 crossed the ball into American box in a final gasp of desperation and USA was not ready as Silvestre Varela netted the ball to tie the game at the final moment. Final score of 2-2.
