Virginia is known not only as the state for lovers but as one that offers some serene hikes to spectacular waterfalls. If you love nature and enjoy hiking, check some of these out this summer.
Easy Hikes
- White Rock: 1.8 miles
- Mine Bank Cascades: 2.8 miles
- Lace Falls: 2 miles and located in the National Bridge State Park
- St. Mary’s: 1.8 miles and located in the George Washington National Forest
- Statons: No hike required and located in the George Washington National Forest
- Dark Hollow: 1.8 miles and located in the Shenandoah National Park
- Scott’s Run: Short of 2 miles
- Great Falls National Park: Less than 0.5 mile
- Dismal: 0.2 mile
- Chestnut Creek: 1.8 miles
- Waterfalls of Falls Ridge Preserve: 0.8 mile
- Roaring Run: 2 miles and located in the Jefferson National Forest
- Falling Springs: No hike involved
Moderate Hikes
- Crabtree Falls: 5.4 miles and the highest falls in Virginia
- Hazel: 5.4 miles and located in the Shenandoah National Park
- South River: 4.2 miles and located in the Shenandoah National Park
- Doyles River: 3 miles and located in the Shenandoah National Park
- Apple Orchard: 2.6 miles
- Jones Hollow: 2.2 miles, and you can enjoy a swimming hole called the Devil’s Bathtub
- Cascade: 4-mile loop
Difficult Hikes
- Stony Run and Blue Suck: 8.8-mile loop and located in the Douthat State Park
- Whiteoak Canyon: 5.4 miles and located in the Shenandoah National Park
- Overall Run: 6.8 miles and located in the Shenandoah National Park. This is the highest fall in the park.
Remember when hiking to stay hydrated and to wear a hat and appropriate shoes. I am always shocked when I see people hiking in sundresses and flip-flops. Bringing along a hiking stick can prove useful. And last, but certainly not least, wear sunscreen. Happy trails!
