April 22- Miami’s First-Ever Earth Day Climate Education 5k

Observe Earth Day at Inaugural 5k Race to Raise Awareness on Florida’s Climate Issues

The CLEO Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to climate education, advocacy, and engagement, will debut its annual Miami “Walk the Talk” 5K Earth Day walk, run and learn event on Saturday April 22, 2023 at MAST Academy 3979 Rickenbacker Causeway and all of South Florida is invited! The event will feature interactive fun, food, music and educational activities to drive awareness of the climate and environmental issues affecting South Florida and motivate residents to get involved to make our community more sustainable and resilient in the face of extreme weather events.

“Earth Day is the perfect time for individuals, families, local government, and the business community to come together and raise awareness of the critical environmental challenges we face not just in South Florida, but across the globe,” said Yoca Arditi-Rocha, executive director of The CLEO Institute. “Our goal is to make this Earth Day gathering a yearly marquee event that leaves a lasting impact in Miami-Dade County and beyond.”

The scenic route for the Earth Day 5K walk and run will wind along the stunning Biscayne Bay and shores of Virginia Key. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be headlined by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and after the race, participants will hear about the county’s progress and achievements coming out of its Climate Action Plan, which was unveiled in 2022.

With an eye towards the start of the heat season on May 1, attendees will also receive information on how the county heat action plan helps South Floridians adopt simple measures to stay cool and safe during hot weather. These actions include planting more trees, creating shaded spaces, and providing tips and resources on how residents can upgrade their homes to be more energy efficient.

Additionally,  to help  with the arrival of Hurricane season on June 1, participants will be given information on how to better prepare for potential storms and extreme weather events.

Proceeds from the event will support The CLEO Institute’s innovative educational campaigns, Climate Resilient Schools programs in partnership with Miami-Dade Public Schools STEAM department, and the Empowering Resilient Women’s program geared to vulnerable communities in our county.

Race day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. for runners and walkers start time will be at 8:30 a.m. To register for the event visit, www.walkthetalkmiami.com. For more information about sponsorship opportunities, contact Mia Cavaco at 305-608-3446 or via email at [email protected].
