Westminster Announces Silver Knight Nominees

Three students from the Class of 2022 will represent Westminster Christian School at the Miami Herald’s 64th Silver Knight Awards. Austin Jones has been nominated for the science category, Devin Maier has been nominated for music and dance, and Carina Swenson for English and literature.

Jones is the founder and president of the school’s first scuba diving club called Underwater Warriors. The club facilitates semester service dive excursions to Key Largo to promote ocean conservation. Their work involves debris clean-up, tours of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and coral restoration activities with several of the world’s leading organizations in marine life conservation, including Professional Association of Diving Instructors, Project Aware and the Coral Restoration Foundation. “My mission is to foster a love for the ocean and a desire to protect the ocean in existing divers, but also to introduce it to new divers,” explained Jones.

Maier organizes live concerts for the elderly community at East Ridge Retirement Home through a club called Heartstrings. “I made sure we had enough student musicians to play in the afternoon concert. I would also put together the songs for the playlist and would introduce ourselves to the residents when we got there,” added Maier.

Swenson founded Song of the Warriors, a club that also focuses on using music to bring joy to the elderly community. “As a group, we aim to bring happiness and life to those at East Ridge by singing them songs during the holidays and instilling in them the power of music, because music truly has the power to change lives.”
