New Year, New Frame of Mind

No matter where you are in your divorce journey, start this year off with positive thoughts and change your frame of mind. Thinking negatively does not improve your situation; it will only make it worse and take you longer to heal. Here is an exercise that will help you stay on a positive track.

Copy these quotes onto separate index cards, pull one every day and tape it onto your bathroom mirror. Even if you think you are not looking at it throughout the day, your subconscious is picking it up. Train your mind to focus on positive things and you will be amazed at the difference it will make. Rebuilding your life, reinventing yourself, finding peace in your soul — it all takes time. Don’t hurry the process, and don’t sit and watch the water boil. Live each day with joy and you’ll see how fast everything falls into place.

  • “It’s time to stop letting your history control your destiny.” — Andy Andrews
  • Happiness is a state of mind — choose it!
  • Having a good attitude is half the battle. Not letting others influence it is the other half.
  • When things in your life change, change with them. Make the needed adjustments instead of resisting.
  • When you fall into that abyss, take a deep breath, put it all into perspective and climb out. No relationship is worth residence there.
  • At the end of the day, recount all that you accomplished instead of the things left undone. Getting through a divorce is one task at a time.
  • Forgiveness has to be the hardest thing to attain, but, oh, the peace and freedom you will feel when you do is worth the work to get there.
  • Divorce is a sad, traumatic “time” in one’s life. Don’t make it a “lifetime” event.
  • Take a deep breath and be thankful it’s not your last. Life is too precious to waste time thinking what could have been. It’s about what can be.
  • To get caught up in how that person did you wrong is a free fall that never ends.
  • A person can justify anything. Don’t let their justification become your reality.
  • No matter how far you have gone on a wrong road, turn back.
  • Divorce is about one’s life changing but not one’s life being taken away.
  • Do not let fear cloud your decision.
  • Do not be a slave to others’ opinions. Discard them as you would rotten food, for nothing good will come out of holding on to others’ opinions.
  • There are times in life we are called to stand alone. Our character is tested. We feel we are no longer “a part of the club.” Stand strong. Branch out. This is a time to look down new paths, make new friends, think new thoughts.
  • Whoever angers you controls you.
  • Always take the high road. Always do the right thing, even if someone is doing the wrong thing to you.
  • “The point was to free yourself from something that costs your heart even more.” — Paolo Coelho
  • “Everything that begins also ends. Make peace with that and all will be well.” — Buddha
  • “Life always waits for some crisis to occur before revealing itself at its most brilliant.” — Paolo Coelho
