Anybody who has traveled with an instrument can tell you about the process’s difficulty. There are many additional steps to take to prepare it for the journey; plus, the size makes getting around challenging. But your main priority is keeping it free from harm and any unnecessary damage. Here are our tips for protecting your instruments while traveling.
Invest in Your Case
While a soft-shell case, which consists of little more than padded cloth, is appropriate for some short car rides, anything substantial requires the proper protective case. A hard-shell case will better prevent damage from drops and jostling. You want your instrument to fit snugly in the case, so this may require a custom-fit case.
Understand Your Rights
Many musicians may now find flying the friendly skies less expensive thanks to a law stating, “An air carrier providing air transportation shall permit a passenger to carry a violin, guitar, or other musical instrument in the aircraft cabin, without charging the passenger a fee in addition to any standard fee.” Even some larger instruments now enjoy several of these same protections. Check with the individual airline for their specific policies before your flight to avoid possible confusion.
Pick the Instrument Carefully
When preparing for a trip with your instrument, consider your options when selecting an instrument. Due to travel’s potential volatility and uncertainty about conditions, you may not want to bring your most valuable equipment. You should also consider the instrument’s size. For example, there are many different types of acoustic guitars, and certain body types, like parlor guitars, are smaller and lighter. These qualities make them easier to transport safely.
Consider Insurance
If your gear is expensive or the equipment is too difficult to replace, consider taking out an insurance policy for protecting your instruments while traveling. Many companies offer different coverage options, ranging from damage to theft, so consider your choices carefully. The peace of mind this provides should make traveling much less stressful.
