In lieu of Breakthrough Miami’s 30th anniversary this year, the organization was selected as one of 13 nonprofit organizations nationally to be awarded the Inspire Change Social Justice Grant on behalf of the NFL. It is also the only Florida-based organization to be awarded in this round of new grants this year.
The $100,000 investment by the NFL will advance a Changemaker Leadership Track for Breakthrough Scholars and recent alumni. Closing the opportunity gap, this work builds students’ capacities to challenge the digital divide, gain early intensive work experience, college advising, financial literacy, and leadership development, impacting not only their personal development and growth trajectories but the efficacy of academic and social enrichment they lead with 900 middle school Scholars.
“As an Opportunity Generator in our community for 30 years, Breakthrough Miami is committed to level the playing field. Aligned with the social justice goals of the NFL, our work is focused on closing the opportunity gap, generating social mobility, nurturing self-actualization, and promoting an inclusive and engaged community,” said Lori-Ann M. Cox, Chief Executive Officer, Breakthrough Miami. “We are honored to be awarded an NFL Inspire Change grant to advance our Changemaker Leadership Track. Together we are forging new pathways to inclusive, just, and equitable economic advancement.”
Breakthrough Miami’s signature “students-teaching-students” model delivers a transformational experience ensuring students achieve post-secondary success and develop as emerging leaders and educational advocates. Established in 1991, Breakthrough Miami has grown over the past three decades to now serving 1,300 5th-12th grade Scholars in an evidence-based 8-year academic and social enrichment program. Instruction and mentorship are fueled by 130 Teaching Fellows (17-24-year-olds) and over 400 volunteers. Breakthrough Miami has been recognized as the best summer learning program in the country by the National Summer Learning Association in 2018 and recently was awarded an Innovation in Distance Learning Award by the Florida Education Foundation.
Aligned with the NFL’s commitment to social justice and economic advancement, Breakthrough Miami will use this grant to continue to serve under-resourced youth and ensure equal opportunity for all students.
