Kendall Regional Welcomes World-Renowned Heart Surgeon

HCA East Florida has named Dr. Robert Saeid Farivar as the new Miami-Dade Market Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery, bringing the surgeon’s world-class expertise to the patients of Kendall Regional Medical Center as well as Aventura Hospital and Medical Center and Mercy Hospital.

The doctor, who joined HCA Healthcare from the Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, is a leader in cardiovascular surgery and was the first surgeon in the United States to perform transcatheter mitral valve replacement. Today, Farivar has not only performed more of the replacements than anyone in the world, but has also performed more than 800 mitral valve repairs. He has also been performing TAVR for over 8 years, a minimally invasive valve surgery known to be after treatment option for patients who may not be candidates for traditional valve surgery. “Heart surgery is often thought of as big-incision, open heart surgery,” says Farivar. “ It has changed, and smaller and smaller incisions are now used for valve and coronary procedures.” It’s these procedures that Farivar says capture much of his focus when treating patients within the HCA East Florida system, noting that the advances in cardiovascular surgery have allowed patients to not only return to work faster, but leave less scarring and less pain than previous treatments.

In his new role, Farivar will treat patients at all three hospitals, bringing his knowledge and expertise to a region that he says previously lacked access to cutting-edge cardiovascular care. “Kendall is a high intensity, high paced environment with quality people, both as patients and as caregivers,” says Farivar of his new home.

Even with an impressive resume, and ever-growing number of successful procedures, Farivar says his passion for the work has yet to cease, and the innovations in his field continue to inspire him. “I wish every person to live a long life, with as much vim and vigor as possible,” he says. “Open heart surgery allows that to happen, and can give many people a longer, fuller life.”
