Group B was up first with Australia facing Spain while Chile faced Netherlands. The more important of the two games was Chile v Netherlands as the winner would be earning their place at the top of the group B ladder. While Australia and Spain were playing for pride and third place in their group. Ultimately it would be Spain that would beat the Socceroos 3-0 in Spain’s first and only win of the tournament, leaving them in third place with 3 total points. Chile faced a strong Netherlands and while they held an over 60% of possession, they failed to net a goal and fell victim to Netherlands’s quick and effective counter attacks that cost Chile the game that would end 2-0 leaving Netherlands in first place followed by Chile in second.

Group A featured Mexico v Croatia and Brazil v Cameroon. The final game was a must win for Croatia who were fighting against being eliminated from the tournament while Brazil was playing to solidify their first place spot. Mexico needed a draw or win to progress and got that even when the referee did not call a clear hand-ball in the box as well as a foul committed on Javier Hernandez. This didn’t stop Mexico as they went on to score twice minutes apart from each other before netting in a third goal that was only countered by one Croatian goal. Final score of 3-1 for Mexico and 4-1 for Brazil leaving the Mexicans in second place by goal difference. Mexico will now face Netherlands in the round of 16 while Brazil will face Chile.
