Breakthrough Miami Inspires Investors to Fuel Opportunities for Scholars

Celebrating and raising investments for the future of our community, Breakthrough Miami hosted its 7th Annual Support-A-Scholar Celebration on Saturday, November 9, 2019. The event was hosted by Board Chair Jeffrey Miller, and wife Tina at their residence on Miami’s Venetian Islands, where supporters from across five leading independent school communities were welcomed by three-time Emmy-award winning Entertainment and Lifestyle Reporter for WFOR, CBS4 Lisa Petrillo. Attendees joined corporate and community partners and raised over $550,000 to ensure motivated yet under-resourced youth have a more level playing field of opportunities, networks, mentorship and resources to reach their dreams.

Each Fall the Breakthrough “Village” comes together across five independent schools and the University of Miami, corporate, professional and community partners and networks, to generate nearly one fifth of the organization’s operating budget. Upon arrival, guests were greeted by a larger than life photo opportunity to “break through.” Tamara Feola’s Vintage 9 Mobile Bar greeted guests for a welcome drink provided by Bovard House of Rosé, who poured generously throughout the night. Guests danced under the stars at the Miller’s spectacular home on the grand veneitian islands, and enjoyed gourmet bites from Sushi Maki, Churrasco Brasil, Joanna’s Marketplace and Curbside Gourmet. Guests especially loved the nitrogen ice from Chill-N at the “science bar” and cryogenics facials provided by the doctors at the Carillon Resort and Spa. Top-shelf beverages flowed from Bacard while guests posed for caricature artists and enjoyed dancers floating in spheres across the pools. Support-A-Scholar is the season’s ultimate “party with a purpose”, igniting the investments to deliver an award-winning program.

“The development of Miami’s educational opportunities’ landscape is one that will continue to evolve and improve over time,” said Lori-Ann Cox, CEO of Breakthrough Miami. “Every year, our Support-A-Scholar celebration gives us an opportunity to pay tribute to Breakthrough Miami’s legacy, highlight our mission, the organizations, the companies, the donors and the alums that have supported us throughout the year, while allowing us to reflect on how far we’ve come together as a village.”
