On Saturday, April 13, from 9:30 AM to Noon, Sunrise School of Miami, a Waldorf-inspired, Pre-K4 to eighth grade private, non-profit school, invites all parents and their children to ride their bicycles to the school at 14920 SW 67th Avenue. Visitors will enjoy a free brunch with sourdough bread (freshly baked by parents), butter, jam, fresh coffee, cold water and a selection of organic vegetables from the school garden. Whether you cycle or drive to Sunrise School of Miami, all are welcome to the Bread & Cyclists event.
Also on April 13, the school’s parent handwork group will demonstrate their skills and will offer a selection of toys and other items that appeal to children, all available for sale at the school store, Red Bird’s Perch.
Sunrise was founded in 2005 as a home-based school in Pinecrest. Initially made up of nine children, the school has grown to an enrollment of 90 students and 17 faculty members. Offering small class sizes, individual attention and a rich curriculum, Sunrise School of Miami is nevertheless surprisingly affordable, compared to other area private schools.
Sunrise has called Palmetto Bay home since 2015, when it relocated to its current site, a lush, 5.6 acre property, bordered by Westminster Academy on the south and Alexander Montessori on the north. The school features a stunning organic garden tended to by Sunrise students which supplies a School Market, run by sixth graders, every other Friday starting at 3:30 pm during select months.
Sunrise School of Miami is unique in Miami-Dade County. In fact, the next nearest Waldorf school is in Boca Raton.
2019 marks the Centennial of Waldorf Education. Pioneered in Germany, Waldorf Education is now offered in over 2,000 schools in 80 countries around the world. Waldorf schools emphasize music, arts, drama, handwork, gardening, Spanish and Mandarin instruction, blending creative, experiential activities with academic subjects. For more information, about Waldorf education, you may visit waldorf-100.org/en.
Tours of Sunrise School of Miami’s Pre-K4 to eighth grade program are offered every other Tuesday morning, including visits to classrooms. For parents of younger children, a once-a-week Parent-Child program is offered for two- to four-year-olds.
