Westminster Christian Students Tackle Future Problems at International Competition

Three Westminster Christian School students were selected to attend the Future Problem Solving (FPS) Program International competition at Iowa State University in June. Junior Sophia Gonzalez competed in the Global Issues Problem Solving Individual Competition, as a result of placing second at the State level. Sixth grade student Daniela Baez, who had the highest score at State in the junior level, and sophomore Brejah Upton, who placed fourth at State, competed in the Multi-Affiliate Global Issues Problem Solving Competition (MAGIC).

Preparing students for the future is at the core of Westminster Christian’s innovative curriculum. Starting in elementary school, students have the opportunity to participate in the Future Problem Solving Program, which stimulates critical and creative thinking skills and encourages students to develop a vision for the future. For nearly a decade, Westminster students have come out on top at the District and State level competitions.

“The students had an incredible experience, honing their creative thinking and problem solving skills at this high-level competition,” said Pete Cabrera, WCS Superintendent. “Daniela’s team placed seventh in the world. What an incredible accomplishment for her, and for all of the Westminster competitors to be recognized at the international level.”

The International Competition features four days of competitive problem solving, cooperative educational seminars, and social activities. More than 2,200 students and coaches from around the world, including countries like Great Britain, Australia, Qatar, Japan, attended FPS Internationals. This year’s topic for Global Issues Problem Solving was Intellectual Property.

Founded in 1961, Westminster Christian School serves 1,225 students from preschool through 12th grade. Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI), founded in 1974, engages students in creative problem solving by stimulating critical and creative thinking skills and encouraging students to develop a vision for the future.
