Flounders are among the most popular targets for fishers all along the Atlantic coast, and it’s no secret why. With a fun catching process and delicious fillets, this fish is one for the record books. Here are four must-know tips and tricks for flounder fishing.
Use Moving Bait
Flounder wait for prey to swim above them, so moving bait mimics the food they’re looking for. Live bait and artificial lures are excellent methods of attracting flounder to your hook. If you want to seal the deal, rent a boat and slowly troll it overhead to mimic the current that a fish would make.
Start at the Bottom
This flatfish spends most of its time at the bottom of the water, hugging the floor waiting for prey to swim overhead. That means you need to employ special techniques to get your bait to the bottom of the water. Your best bet is to use a sliding sinker rig or Carolina rig. You’ll put an egg sinker on the running line, then a swivel. After that, a leader from 18 to 26 inches connects the swivel to your hook.
Look for Structure
While it’s possible to find flounder on open flats, you’ll have a lot more luck if you stick by structures. Whether natural or man-made, flounders enjoy hanging out under ledges with rocky texture beneath them. You don’t need to invest in a boat to score some flounder; just stick to the edge of the water and look for structure!
How To Start Gigging
Fishing is only the beginning when it comes to finding flounders. Flounder gigging is a way to catch flounder without a rod and reel. Instead, you’ll use a fish spear (also known as a flounder gig) to skewer flounder on the bay floor. With a flounder gigging light and your brand-new flounder gig, you’re all set to go (once you familiarize yourself with local gigging regulations, of course).
Now that you understand these must-know tips and tricks for flounder fishing, head down to the water and catch yourself some flatfish!
