Actinic keratoses (AKs) are a common skin condition that can be concerning if left untreated. These rough, scaly patches or lesions develop on areas of the skin frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, neck, scalp or lips. At MiamiDerm, under the expert care of Anna Chacon, M.D., we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of AKs, providing our patients with the highest level of care to ensure their skin health and overall well-being.
What Are Actinic Keratoses?
Actinic keratoses, or solar keratoses, are precancerous lesions caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or tanning beds. They often manifest as rough, dry or scaly patches. They may be flesh-colored, red or brown and can sometimes be itchy or uncomfortable. While AKs themselves are not cancerous, they have the potential to evolve into squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, making early detection and treatment crucial.
Effective Treatment Options for Actinic Keratoses
MiamiDerm offers a range of effective treatment options. Our goal is to provide comprehensive care to address immediate concerns and promote long-term skin health.
- Cryotherapy
- Cryotherapy is a popular and highly effective treatment for AKs. It involves the application of extreme cold to the affected area. The cold temperature destroys the abnormal cells, causing the lesion to blister and eventually fall off. This method is quick, minimally invasive and typically well tolerated by patients. It is particularly useful for treating isolated lesions or small clusters of AKs.
- Topical Chemotherapy Creams
- For patients with multiple AKs or larger affected areas, topical chemotherapy creams can be an excellent option. They are designed to target and destroy the abnormal cells. MiamiDerm commonly uses two types: imiquimod and Efudex® (fluorouracil).
- Imiquimod: Imiquimod works by stimulating the body’s immune system to attack and destroy the abnormal cells. Over several weeks, this treatment removes existing AKs and helps prevent the development of new ones.
- Efudex (fluorouracil): Efudex is a topical cream that interferes with the DNA synthesis of abnormal cells, leading to their destruction. It is typically applied for several weeks, during which the damaged skin will heal, revealing healthier, clearer skin underneath.
