Make a Lava Lamp

This experiment is super simple yet fascinating to watch, and it is one of the best ways to teach students the states of matter and chemical reactions. Fortunately, the ingredients for this homemade lava lamp are easy to find in any grocery store or household supply closet.

All you need is vegetable oil, water, food coloring, and an Alka-Seltzer tablet. Start by pouring oil into a clear jar until it‘s almost full. Then, add some colored water. The oil and water don’t mix, so the colored water will stay on top. Next, drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet into the jar and watch the magic happen!

Create an Egg Geode

A geode is a rock formation with crystals inside, and you can replicate one with this cool experiment! You will need Epsom salt, food coloring, beakers or a jar, water, and raw eggs. Remove the yolk and whites from the eggs, then peel the membrane from the shell by placing the shell under warm running water. Dry the shell on a paper towel, and then heat up 100 milliliters of water in a beaker until boiling. Stir in your Epsom salt one spoonful at a time until the solution is clear. Add your food coloring, and then let it cool for a few minutes. Submerge the eggshell into the food coloring and Epsom salt liquid, leaving it there for at least a few days.

Soon, you should be able to see crystals forming inside your eggshell, giving the appearance of a geode. This experiment is a great way to teach everyone about solution formation, states of matter, and rock formations.

Make a Tornado in a Bottle

Tornadoes are one of nature’s most powerful phenomena—but instead of waiting for one to occur naturally, why not try creating your own? All you need is two plastic bottles or glass jars filled halfway with water and duct tape or glue to connect them securely. Then, just spin the bottle around quickly until the air swells like a tornado.

Kids will love experimenting with different speeds and watching how much faster the “tornado” gets when they increase their spinning speed. This experiment is great for teaching kids about air pressure and motion.
