How To Transform a Shed Into a Greenhouse

If you want a new hobby or a more sustainable way of life, here’s how you can transform your backyard tool shed into a greenhouse stocked with edible plants.

How To Transform a Shed Into a Greenhouse

If your storage shed has been useless for a while, why not transform it into a space of life? You can easily convert your shed into a greenhouse, making it the perfect space to create an edible herb garden or indoor plant garden. This is a great way to build a sustainable living, too! This project is easiest if you’re buying a new garden shed, but even if you’re working with an old one, here’s how to transform a shed into a greenhouse.

Install a Skylight on Your Roof

Sunlight is essential for most plants, and by installing a plexiglass skylight, you will fulfill their photosynthesis needs. Before installing the roof, determine where the skylight would be the most effective. Many people place it directly in the middle so that all four corners receive sunlight. If you have the budget, installing multiple skylights will allow your plants to thrive even more.

Add Shelving and Benches to Your Shed

Adding potting benches and shelves maximizes your space inside the greenhouse. The shelves will provide additional storage for your materials, tools, and plants. If you keep your pots on the ground, they will take up floor space and could experience cracks, breaks, and other forms of damage. Your plants could also miss out on sunlight if you place them too low.

Create an Efficient Ventilation System

When transforming your shed into a greenhouse, you need to ensure that your shed has proper ventilation. Your plants will need continuous fresh air. Poor ventilation can influence mildew and mold growth, cause wood rot, and even kill your plants. Before giving your plants a new home, install a vent at both ends of your shed just below the eaves. Be sure to seal the vent’s edges to keep out excess moisture.

Replace Your Windows With Clear Acrylic Sheets

The original windows on your shed are OK, but clear acrylic sheets are often better. Regular windows typically don’t let enough light in to give the plants what they need. Acrylic sheets are highly durable and transparent, meaning you don’t have to worry about your plants during severe storms. When installing your sheets, secure the glazing tape to make a waterproof seal.
