Many homeowners don’t know how easy it is to clean your garbage cans at home. A simple cleaning can do wonders for an old garbage can. There are also many benefits to cleaning your garbage cans regularly. Keep reading to learn the steps to cleaning your garbage cans at home to help your old garbage cans look new.
Rinse It
Start by emptying your garbage can and rinsing it completely with water. The easiest way to do this is to take your garbage can outside and rinse it with the garden hose. If you don’t have outdoor space, you can also accomplish this in a deep sink at home or in the bath or shower. Use enough water pressure to remove most dirt or leftover debris.
Spray It Out
Next, take a disinfectant cleaner and spray out the inside and outside of the garbage can. This will help remove germs, stains, and other built-up messes from the bin. If your garbage can has some old, worn-in stains, try adding a pinch of baking soda to these areas to deodorize it and lift the stains.
Scrub It
Without removing the disinfectant or baking soda, take a sponge or small brush and scrub the inside and outside of your bin. Scrub it until these materials work into the stains and dirt present. You should start to see these stains loosen and dissolve away into the cleaning mixture. You may want to use a bristled brush and some extra elbow grease for particularly stubborn debris.
Do the Final Rinse
Now that you have thoroughly scrubbed away the dirt and debris, you can wash away the residue from the cleaning solution. Use the high-pressure option on your garden hose sprayer to wash away any remaining dirt and cleaning solution that might be hiding in the cracks. Or give it a thorough rinse in the sink or bathtub if you’re washing it off indoors. Once your bin is completely clean, you can either leave it to air dry or dry it with paper towels or a clean rag. Make sure your bin is completely dry before adding a new trash bag to avoid trapping moisture and promoting mold growth.
While it’s a good idea to replace your garbage can every so often, you don’t always need to replace your trash can when it gets dirty. Remember these steps to cleaning your garbage cans at home the next time you notice your garbage cans collecting dirt or odors. A quick wash will make your garbage bin look better and make taking out the trash feel like less of a chore.
