Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott Donates $4.8 Million to Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade

Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade is pleased to announce that philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has pledged a $4.8 million donation to support its mission of enabling all young people, especially those who need it the most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. This transformational gift will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s Capital Campaign to completely rebuild and renovate its Northwest Club into a state-of-the-art facility for generations to come.

Scott is an American author and philanthropist. She is the founder and executive director of Bystander Revolution, an online resource offering practical, crowdsourced advice about simple things individuals can do to take the power out of bullying. In May 2019, she signed “The Giving Pledge,” and promised to give away at least half of her wealth over the course of her lifetime.

Recognizing the needs of the community to which she can contribute, Scott made significant financial donations to multiple Boys & Girls Clubs around the country. Scott worked with a team of advisors to help accelerate her giving and took a data-driven approach to identifying organizations with strong leadership teams and results, with special attention to those operating in communities facing high projected food insecurity, high measures of racial inequity, high local poverty rates, and low access to philanthropic capital. Scott is committed to this research and deeper diligence not only to identify organizations with high potential for impact, but also to pave the way for unsolicited and unexpected gifts given with full trust and no strings attached. Scott’s entire commitment will be paid upfront and left unrestricted in order to provide Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade with maximum flexibility.

“We are incredibly grateful and humbled by MacKenzie Scott’s generosity to select us for such atransformational gift to support great futures for our area youth,” said Alex Rodriguez-Roig, president of Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade. “With her support, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade can completely rebuild and renovate our Northwest Club. The Club’s positive programs are very important to keeping our youth members engaged in a healthy, safe, productive, and enjoyable environment.”

Located at 10915 NW 14 Avenue Miami, FL 33167, the Northwest Club opened its doors in 1953 and today it serves predominately African American children from lower income families. Boys & Girls of Miami-Dade’s plan, which is already planned, is to completely rebuild the 11-acre campus including demolition of the existing 1950s building to build a new 25,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility featuring a learning center, STEM and computer lab, teen center and recreational areas, and the complete refurbishment of its existing fields and gym. The total cost of the project is $13 million, and construction is expected to begin in 2023.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade offers many positive programs, including its mentoring, educational after-school programs, homework assistance and tutoring, computer training, social skills, dance, arts and crafts and summer and athletic programs, for area youth who need them the most.
