Miami Dade College (MDC) is turning 60 and everyone is invited to this milestone celebration! MDC will host its 5th Annual I AM MDC Day with virtual, community-wide events through Sept. 6, which commemorates the first day of classes back in 1960. As we cannot all meet because of the current pandemic, a virtual event production & management company will be used to host the virtual event and everyone is invited!
I AM MDC Day celebrates MDC’s rich tradition of elevating the community and changing lives through education and opportunity. The day of giving and school pride also raises critical funds for scholarships and programs for students.
The College first opened its doors on September 6, 1960 amid desegregation and the influx of thousands of Cuban refugees. The first class only had 1,428 students, including seven Black students, making it the first integrated junior college in Florida. Today, MDC is the largest public institution of higher education in the United States and is still championing diversity, resilience, and educational excellence. Most recently, the College has been supporting students and the community impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with scholarships, stipends and courses for in demand jobs through MDC Cares.
I AM MDC Day is organized by the Miami Dade College Foundation, which raises essential private funds for student scholarships and programs, as well as emerging needs, such as rent and food to support students. I AM MDC Day is generously supported by corporate partners, including City National Bank and Geico.
MDC’s National Landmark Freedom Tower will be illuminated blue on Thursday, Sept. 6, to mark this special event. Show your MDC pride by wearing blue on Sept. 6 and posting your photos to social media with the official hashtag #IAMMDC. Give to MDC at I AM MDC Day.
