Oral surgery may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think summer vacation, but you may want to think again. Or so says Dr. Lawrence Brown, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in the Dadeland area and owner of Dadeland Oral Surgery Associates.
“Summer is the ideal time for parents to consider evaluation and removal of the wisdom teeth for their children,” says Dr. Brown, who has been practicing for more than twenty years. “It gives us time to complete a consultation with appropriate diagnostic studies and schedule the procedure, and then allows for the patient to have a recovery period without missing schoolwork or after school activities.” According to Dr. Brown, parents should start considering an evaluation by age 12 or 13, as wisdom teeth removal (and recovery) is generally easier and fraught with less complications when the patient is a teenager. “What I find, is that for those patients who are adults and come to the office for evaluation of wisdom teeth which do require removal, the procedure is more complex, there is higher risk of complications and there is a prolonged recovery period,” says Dr. Brown.
But Dr. Brown also notes that not every patient is a surgical candidate. Using 3D Cone Beam Imaging in a state-of-the art facility with digital technology, the doctor and his staff are able to gain a three dimensional picture of the local anatomy and its relationship to the wisdom teeth, as well as disease associated with all of the teeth of the upper and lower jaws. Based upon the patient’s concerns, clinical exam and radiographic studies– along with a radiology reading of the scan– a treatment plan is formulated. The treatment may be observation, non-surgical options, or surgery for the removal of the wisdom teeth. Dr. Brown suggests most patients seeing the dentist should have a panoramic X-ray taken to evaluate for wisdom teeth and jaw disease, as early intervention is the key to less invasive procedures.
For those patients who require treatment, Dr. Brown and his highly-trained staff administer IV Sedation along with a local anesthetic, and complete most procedures in the office. “Our goal is to provide compassionate quality care in a comfortable environment that exceeds your expectations,” says Dr. Brown, a New Jersey native who received his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from New York’s Columbia University and is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. “The advantage of having a surgical procedure completed at our office is that your evaluation, treatment and post operative care is all done by the same doctor with the same staff in the same location. We carefully review your health history, procedure and needs.” The doctor is also quick to assure patients that he is dedicated to making himself available at all times. “I am here to see and serve my patients on a daily basis,” he explains. “You will not call my office and be told the doctor is here twice a month or only on Tuesdays. I am in the office Monday through Friday. Our team is well trained to answer any questions regarding the entire process 24 hours a day.”
Beyond wisdom teeth, Dr. Brown sees patients for other types of dental extractions, canine exposures to assist with your orthodontic treatment, laughing gas, biopsies, bone grafts and select dental implants cases. He has hospital privileges at Baptist Hospital of Miami and South Miami Hospital. “We work closely with patients of all ages and their dentists and medical doctors to ensure communication and a thorough knowledge of each patient’s specific needs,” says Dr. Brown, who also provides oral surgery services to the Miami Heat, University of Miami and Florida International University athletes. The office even caters to emergency cases, making every attempt to evaluate, address and complete those procedures within 24 hours in most situations.
