A Wellness Journey Home

[dropcap type=”background”]I[/dropcap]t always feels good to come home, but for Drs. J. Shimon and Melissa Rubinstein, that feeling goes both ways. The couple, both practicing chiropractors for more than four years, have expanded their practice from North Miami Beach with the hope of bringing a new approach to family wellness to the Southern Dade County area.

“Our vision was always to come back and serve the community that we grew up in,” says Shimon, who grew up in Pinecrest and now calls Cutler Bay home. Alongside his wife Melissa, also a Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay native, they opened their Cutler Bay practice, Rubinstein Family Chiropractic, in October of 2017, placing a special emphasis on chiropractic care for the whole family. “Pregnancy and pediatric care is more than half of our practice,” he says. “We are truly a family-based wellness practice,” adds Melissa.

They are wanting to provide people with a place to go for a more natural way to treat any ailments they may have. “We don’t just offer our chiropractor services – when someone comes to us, we make sure we listen to them and provide advice they can follow outside of our treatment.” For example, people who need a chiropractor often have to deal with chronic pain so they suggest places they can buyhashonline, certain relaxation techniques they can use, or places they can go for further physical therapy. They really want to help people who come to us as much as they can.

Both doctors had an immediate draw to pediatric and family care and have advanced their studies through the International Chiropractic Pediatric association(ICPA). After graduating from chiropractic school in Marietta, Georgia, the couple moved to North Miami Beach and opened their first office location, serving the communities of North Miami Dade and helping countless babies, children and adults. Once they could no longer ignore the call home, they moved south and opened their second practice “We were eager to serve the South Dade community,” says Shimon.

Today, the couple says they are passionate about bringing a unique approach of health and healing to patients of all ages and stages of life in their home community through chiropractic care. “We want to teach people that their bodies are self-healing and by reducing stress on their nervous system it allows the body to heal from within and function at its best,” says Shimon. “It doesn’t matter if you have symptoms or complaints, chiropractic is about the optimal expression of human potential.”

They also offer Webster Technique, a specific technique that safely and comprehensively balances the mother’s pelvis in pregnancy and increases nerve system function to not only help pregnancy-related pain, but also improve the biomechanics necessary for delivery. Once the baby arrives, Shimon says many mothers continue their care and even bring their babies in. “Commonly infants are brought to us to clear any stress from the birth process, especially if they are experiencing issues like breastfeeding trouble, acid-reflux, colic and even ear infections.” While chiropractic care is not a treatment for these conditions, the doctors explain neurological interference caused by spinal misalignments can disrupt the body’s ability to function and heal correctly. “We help increase and enhance the overall function of the infant’s body through very gentle adjustments and reducing stress on the nervous system.” explains Shimon.

For older children and adults, the Rubinsteins often see issues relating to excessive sitting, text neck and even heavy backpacks that strain the spine. “If a child is always slouched or says that it hurts to sit up straight they may be in need of help,” says Shimon. “We see a lot of children of all ages who spend too much time hunched over their phones or tablets or who spend the day sitting in less than favorable chairs hunched over a desk.” Many parents report that their children are more focused in school, get better grades, are sick less often and perform better at sports after including regular chiropractic care in their wellness routines.

Shimon explains that patients typically come in frequently at the beginning of treatment in order to work through a “corrective phase” and then anywhere from weekly to monthly in order to maintain their alignment and progress. The practice works with many insurance companies as well as having affordable options for those with limited or no chiropractic coverage.

This month, the office will begin hosting Pathways Gathering Groups, beginning with an 11:00 am meeting on February 21 . Using “Pathways for Family Wellness” magazine as a starting point, the group will connect like-minded parents and create a space where family wellness choices are explored, discussed and supported. Through their website and magazine, Pathways is a leader in holistic wellness ideas, collaborating with consciousness leaders, cutting-edge scientists and researchers, families on their conscious path, holistic practitioners and dynamic nonprofit organizations to bring the most current insights into wellness to readers. “We want to see Southern Dade County full of healthy, vibrant families” says Melissa. “We think there’s a need for health care professionals who have the ability and knowledge to lead entire families out of our current health crisis and towards a more fulfilled life. Our vision is to be at the center of change when it comes to natural health and healing and helping people of all ages reach their inborn potential.”
