There is a new player in the world of non-surgical fat removal, the name is TruSculpt 3D™. As a board certified plastic surgeon with almost twenty years of experience I’ve witnessed the never-ending effort of non-surgical techniques, and devices, try to match surgical results. Fortunately for those who squirm when they imagine being in an operating room, going under anesthesia, or spending weeks recovering from a procedure, I’ve got good news for you.
TruSculpt 3D™ is the latest FDA approved radiofrequency device that promises to remove up to 25% of unwanted fat in one single session. Yes, you heard it right, one single session. And the deal gets better. The treatment is painless, takes about one hour (to treat waist and abdomen), and there is NO downtime…again NO DOWNTIME!!! Other problem areas such as thighs, arms, and under the chin are popular target treatments.
“What sorcery!! You say?” No, just science! For those interested in science, here is a brief description of the process. Aesthetic Healthcare Devices that tend to use radiofrequency could be a brilliant way to deliver energy through the skin and heat up the fat cells enough that they die (permanently). With patented technology, the TruSculpt 3D™ handpiece can heat the fat layer up to 4 degrees hotter than the surface of the skin. This temperature differential is the key to the safety margin provided, as well as the comfort level experienced when compared to the competition. Studies report that up to 25% of fat cells can be reduced in a targeted area in a single treatment. The body absorbs the dead cells, and full results are seen in about 12 weeks.
Before deciding on TruSculpt 3D™ I reviewed all the existing technologies out there. Although CoolSculpting™ has been around for years newer and better technologies have arrived. CoolSculpting™ works by sucking up your skin and fat into a rectangular shaped box, and proceeds to freeze this area. The procedure can be uncomfortable, and after the procedure is finished the skin and fat are left in an unsightly state commonly referred to as a “stick of butter.” This mass of near frozen tissue must then be massaged by the technician back into normal shape. I’ve been told by patients that the process is painful. The science behind this technology is that fat cell will die from the cold before your skin will. This fine line has not been without some negative outcomes. Nerve damage, and actual frostbite injuries have been reported. Another issue that bothered me as a plastic surgeon was the lack of control of the treated area. Because the treatment box has very defined edges the sharp fat loss results have sometimes been referred to as “shark bites.”
Another option is SculpSure. This process uses LASER technology to achieve the heat levels needed for treatment, but the results are not as reliable, and many patients do not tolerate the treatments. It was described by an actual patient as “getting your skin tasered.”
So as the new year kicks off, and the love handles and muffin tops are at their post-holiday best, put your fat on notice, and heat things up.
