One of my favorite times of the year is here – the winter/holiday season. Whether it’s vacation time, holiday meals or religious celebrations, the hustle bustle, family gatherings, meeting with friends and reminiscing of the past – are what this time of year is all about During this season, we also remember those who have passed before us. Ahh … the memories. And if you are anything like me, many of your fondest memories are centered on laughter, family and music.
Did you know that a relationship with music begins at birth, if not before? It plays a role in the formation of our identity when we are young. When the lullaby’s begin, eyes light up. Bodies start moving. Hands start clapping. Feet start stomping. And around the holidays, music is everywhere. It surrounds us! We often find ourselves walking through the stores humming to the music and signing favorite carols. Did you ever pretend to be a famous singer on stage, grabbing a “hair brush” and singing a song? Or putting a favorite song on the stereo, grabbing headsets and singing at the top of your lungs? And laughing? Ahh … the music memories.
Research have found that music is an important influence on our memories. We associate songs with emotions, people and places we’ve experienced in the past. As I remember my mother who passed away this year, I remember the songs she sang to me as a young child – “A Bushel and a Peck, and a Hug Around the Neck,” “You are my Sunshine.” And a couple of other oldies – “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.” Ahh … the music memories. The relationship between music and memory is powerful.
Music memories are often shared with family and friends. We go to concerts. We listen together. At a party, it is something that we hear while dancing or chatting with a friend. It’s amazing that you sometimes cannot remember the words to a song, but you almost always remember the tune. The music. The sounds.
As you travel this holiday season – at the stores, in your car, in your home, at a concert – listen to the music surrounding you. Sing a song. Pay attention to the special memories that arise when you hear one of your favorite oldies, it will bring back time. Find that classic song, tune your old guitar or learn how to play a musical instrument. Begin making your own music memories. Ahh … the memories!
