The Star-Crossed Love Story of Chocolate and Valentine’s Day

To most people, chocolate is a wondrous substance to be eaten. To me, chocolate is art. Gleaming truffles awash in vivid color are far greater than mere treats; they are a decadent proclamation of love for your someone special. We may agree to disagree, but there is no arguing that chocolate takes center stage each Valentine’s Day.

The sweet fixation dates back to Roman times, when sugar was a precious commodity for exchange. As Valentine’s Day spread to the English-speaking world in the 1840s, Richard Cadbury began selling a new variety of edible chocolate in beautifully decorated boxes he designed himself. From that point, it was a quick jump to taking the familiar images of Cupids and roses and putting them on heart-shaped boxes. While Richard Cadbury didn’t actually patent the heart-shaped box, it’s widely believed that he was the first to produce one.

Today, consumers spend nearly $2 billion on candy each Valentine’s Day. The connection of chocolates and Valentine’s Day is much like the sentiment of everlasting love, and unwavering devotion that never disappoints.

Chocolates, whether savored or admired, are miniature works of art containing romantic blends of pure, intense flavors that will captivate your taste buds. This February 14, Norman Love Confections will bring back its best-selling taste and textures that have aroused the senses from years past. Inspired by the tale of a blossoming romance, the appropriately named First Love collection is available from January 25 to February 14. Enjoy with your first love, or new love, this Valentine’s Day.
