The 2014 World Cup Has Ended

It came to extra time as 90 minutes was not enough to separate Argentina and Germany who faced each other for the third time in a World Cup final. Both Teams looked to make history; Germany to be the first European team to win in South America, and Argentina to win their third World Cup as well as Lionel Messi adding the famed trophy to his list of accomplishments.

The game was always going to be tight. Germany boasting the best team play of the tournament with almost no apparent weaknesses. Argentina captained and led by the greatest player to ever touch a football. Germany dominated possession and as a unit moved up the pitch towards the defensive Argentina that swallowed pressure and struck back with the counter. That was the approach both teams had. Germany wanted to control, Argentina wanted to let them. The flaw in this Argentinian plan was that their defensive line went too far back and close to their goal and although that didn’t result in immediate goals, it was inevitable that Germany would score. Paired with Argentina’s struggle to finish once in the box created a lingering sense that the Germans would claim their fourth World Cup. At the 113 minute, this feeling was proven right as Germany exploited Argentina’s deep defensive line and after controlling the volley, Mario Götze was able to net the winner for Germany.

At that moment the entire world knew that Germany had won. It was impossible for Argentina to come back. While it was a close game and either could have won, it can’t be argued: the deserving team won. Germany displayed world class football of intelligent passing, reading of the game, build up play, strong defense, and persistence. With broken hearts, Argentina can be proud to have made it so far and to have lost to a team who earned their win.

The 2014 World Cup was nothing short of beautiful. Incredible goals, incredible games, a magnificent atmosphere, joy, happiness, and everything in between; it proved to be what everyone expected. Now the wait begins again for the 2018 World Cup.
