World Cup Recap: Day 15

Day 15 FIFA of the World Cup was the final day of group stage games and determined the final 16 that will play elimination games in order to reach the final game on July 13. The final group games were for groups G and H. USA v Germany, Portugal v Ghana and Algeria v Russia, Belgium v Korea.

In group G The United States hoped to keep their dreams of the next round alive by tying or winning against Germany since losing would leave their fate to Portugal and Ghana in a game where a +4 win by Portugal would get them qualified or a win by Ghana would get Ghana qualified. Eventually it came to the latter as Germany was finally rewarded for their constant strikes on goal in the 55′ to give the Germans a 1-0 win. The future of the Americans now lied in the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo who scored the winning goal for Portugal after the game had been tied until the 80′. CR7 gave Portugal a 2-1 win over Ghana and thus kept both Portugal and Ghana from the final 16 and gave Germany and The U.S. first and second place, respectively.

The final two places were disputed by Belgium v Korea, and Russia v Algeria in group H. Belgium was already qualified but a Korean win and an Algerian loss or tie would qualifying the Koreans. Likewise a Korean loss would benefit Algeria as all they needed was a tie to join Belgium in the final 16. Belgium faced heavy fire from Korea but one single goal late into the game gave Belgium the win over Korea and eliminated them 1-0. Meanwhile an early, 6′ goal had given Russia the confidence that they would be joining Belgium until the 60′ when Algeria tied the game and Russia failed to come back and take the win, being outplayed by the Algerians, Russia was eliminated from the cup as the final whistle blew and gave Algeria the final spot in the final 16.

The round of 16 begins Saturday after a day of break the match ups for Saturday are:
