A Trip Back in Time with the Stone House

For lovers of history, architecture and culture in the Miami area, few places are as rich in these possibilities as the Deering Estate. This museum, national landmark and cultural and ecological field station has educated and entertained its visitors for decades. The staff and volunteers at Deering Estate offer complementary exhibition viewing nights that highlight a variety of contemporary, historic and visiting exhibitions inside the historic homes.

Learn about the history of one of Miami’s most unique landmarks at the Deering Estate’s new Stone House exhibit.

In fact, one of the Deering Estate’s most notable landmarks, a beautiful home known as the Stone House, was built 100 years ago, in 1922. To commemorate its construction, the Deering Estate is presenting a special exhibition this year called Connecting Worlds: Building the Stone House.

The exhibition, which will take place daily January 21 through April 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will showcase some of the objects, photographs, architecture, history and culture that make the Stone House so special. The home, which was originally designed for Charles and Marion Deering by Phineas Paist, was built to house Deering’s important art collection brought from Spain.

Through the years, it has ensured the safekeeping of paintings by old masters, antique sculpture, ironwork and textiles, as well as works by the great contemporary artists of Charles Deering’s time, including John Singer Sargent and Ramon Casas i Carbó.

Documentary images of the construction of the Stone House, as well as never-before-displayed original photographs of Charles Deering’s collection at Maricel, will be on view. This special building has stood the test of time and the elements, and it continues to serve as a community anchor and source of pride for Palmetto Bay, Miami-Dade County and the State of Florida.

In addition to the main exhibition, the Deering Estate is also offering additional architectural talks and programs as part of the Stone House’s 100th anniversary.

The Deering Estate is located at 16701 SW 72 Ave. in Miami. For more information, call 305.235.1668 or visit their website at deeringestate.org.
