5 Saltwater Fishing Equipment Must-Haves

The salty breeze and listing boat are an enticing combination. Here are five saltwater fishing equipment must-haves to ensure your outing is a success.

5 Saltwater Fishing Equipment Must-Haves

Obviously, you will need a boat for offshore fishing unless you’re a really good swimmer (That’s a joke. Please don’t cast a line while doggy-paddling). However, we won’t be discussing boats today, and we’ll focus instead on the gear you need. To catch the best fish consistently, here are five saltwater fishing equipment must-haves.

Rods and Reels

While it may not shock you, rods and reels are the most important equipment to bring along on your trip. They also come with the most options! For deep-sea fishing, you’ll want a six- or seven-foot medium-action rod that comes with a heavy-duty baitcasting reel. You’ll also need to ensure you have at least a 20-pound test microfilament line to reduce the risk of a big fish snapping it.

Binoculars

Before you can start catching fish, you’ll need to locate them. A pair of marine binoculars are helpful when scanning the skies for diving seagulls (which are a telltale sign of fish). The best binoculars are gyroscopically stabilized and have a magnification that lets you see for miles.

Landing Nets

Buy a landing net based on the size of your boat, as larger boats will require a longer handle to ensure you can reach it into the water. The larger the fish, the riskier it is to swing it on the boat over the gunwale, so you’ll bring home more trophies with a landing net to scoop reeled-in fish up and out of the water.

Ruler

Different states have different fishing regulations, including the minimum size of the fish you’re allowed to take home. Bring along a ruler to know for sure you’re following your state’s guidelines.

Lures

The type of lure you need will depend a lot on the fish you’re hoping to catch. However, there are some handy lure guides for offshore fishing, so refer to those before you embark if you want the best luck when casting your line.

Now that you know these five saltwater fishing equipment must-haves, you’re ready to depart for an unforgettable fishing trip!
