While there’s some class and sophistication to an old home, most of us want our home to look “in.” The problem with modernizing your home is learning where to begin. There are plenty of resources telling us how to decorate the interior of our homes, many of which are helpful, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore the exterior. Plus, since we’re in Florida, there’s a good chance we’re going to spend more time outside than we would inside––it is the sunshine state after all. So, using Florida to our advantage, we put together several ways to modernize the exterior of your home. Read on to learn more.
Update your roof to something different
If you take a look at the roofs on the homes in your neighborhood, there’s a really good chance that most people still have asphalt shingle roofs. While asphalt shingles are fine and do the job, you can update your home with metal roofs. Not only do metal roofs look great, they’re much stronger against wind and they don’t hold onto moisture like other roofing alternatives. In other words, metal roofs can withstand the Florida weather.
Improve the ambiance with outdoor lights
There’s nothing better than taking a walk around the neighborhood during a warm summer evening and seeing your home glowing with beautiful lights. There are a lot of different routes you can go when it comes to installing lights. You could be a little more extreme and incorporate yard and path lighting, or you could simply install soffit and garage lighting. Whichever option you choose, new exterior lighting will certainly make your home stand out.
Add stone to your landscaping
Whether you’re a gardener or not, your yard should make you look like you know what you’re doing (even if you don’t). Incorporating stone in your yard is a great way to fool everyone in the neighborhood, and of course, using stone is a more modern approach to landscaping. Depending on how much money you want to spend on your yard, you could use something extravagant like flagstone or limestone. Alternatively, there are plenty of affordable options like segmented retaining walls or brick.
Install cable railings on your deck and porch
Regardless if you’re living in a neighborhood or right off the water, you should consider modernizing your deck and porch with cable railings. Cable railings offer an unobstructed view, whether that’s looking out into the ocean or into your neighbor’s yard. Not to mention, they’re very durable and also able to withstand the Florida weather. While these advantages are all great, they’re only a few of the reasons people love cable railings.
Now that you know of a few ways to modernize the exterior of your home, you better get to work. Start researching which project you want to tackle first and get on it––just don’t forget to check your local regulations, as you might need a permit for your project.
