On Friday, April 5, 2019 the Town of Cutler Bay received three awards from the American Public Works Association’s (APWA) Florida Chapter Awards Program for the Town’s Manta Drive Roadway Improvement Project, which was completed in 2018.
Each year the APWA Florida Chapter Awards Program recognizes individuals, projects and firms for a job well done at the Annual Conference and Exposition. This year saw three of those awards go to the Town’s Manta Drive Roadway Improvement Project for the following categories:
Professional Manager of the Year (Stormwater): Stacey Sookdew-Sing (Town Consultant with RJ Behar & Company)—awarded for her professionalism and performance in the management of the project.
Consultant of the Year Award: Stantec Consulting Services, Inc.—awarded for their notable achievements in planning, designing and implementing the project.
Contractor of the Year Award: Metro Express Inc.—awarded for their dedication, commitment, and professionalism for completing the construction of the project.
The Town’s Public Works Director, Alfredo Quintero, and Stormwater Utility Manager, Yenier Vega, represented the Town during the APWA Awards luncheon, along with the award recipients.
“As a long-time resident of Cutler Bay, I know very well how Manta Drive was in need of repairs,” expressed Mayor Tim Meerbott. “It had no sidewalks, the drainage was inefficient, and there was a lack of landscaping. To be awarded by the APWA Florida Chapter Awards Program for the improvements made to Manta Drive is just the crowning moment of our Public Works Department’s hours of planning, dedication and hard work. I am very proud of our team.”
The Manta Drive Roadway Improvement Project was completed in August of 2018 and consisted of adding new sidewalks, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) crosswalks, driveway approaches, continuous valley gutter, improved drainage, asphalt milling and resurfacing, back of sidewalk harmonization, and street tree planting. The cost of the project totaled $423,809, which was substantially made possible by the $344,260 from the Florida Department of Transportation Alternatives Grant that Town staff were able to secure, along with the Town’s People’s Transportation Plan (PTP) Funds of $79,549.
