After nearly twenty years of practicing plastic surgery, weight loss, and wellness in South Florida, I’ve had the unique privilege of seeing the aging process first hand. Many of my patients have been with me since I started my practice, so I’ve seen what treatments work best to maintain youthful healthy skin. Let’s get started.
Yes, Botox. I consider this to be the best investment in long term skin maintenance. This ubiquitous neurotoxin is used to strategically paralyze facial muscles of expression in order to prevent wrinkles. When we animate the face the skin folds in the same exact area hundreds of thousands of times throughout the years. Over time, the folds become permanent wrinkles. Inhibiting the muscle activity prevents the folding of the skin. This unwrinkled skin will look beautiful for years to come. For optimal results treatments should be repeated every three-to-four months. For ideal prevention I recommend starting treatments before the wrinkles are visible. If you can see “too many” wrinkles when you animate, start thinking about Botox therapy. A good injector will leave you looking natural without a frozen appearance.
Technological advances in laser technology have given us a myriad of devices capable of treating multiple conditions.
- Laser Genesis: Arguably the most popular laser facial in the country, this treatment is called the “Red Carpet Facial” because you can do it the day of the big event. This lunchtime procedure uses a Yag laser, which resurfaces, shrinks pores, evens out pigmentation, and treats mild to moderate acne, leaving the face looking younger and brighter. The treatment takes less than one hour and you can resume normal activities immediately.
- Pearl: This is a more aggressive resurfacing treatment. It smooths fine wrinkles and removes age spots, leaving the skin baby smooth. This is a great treatment for South Floridians with sun damage. There is a four-to-five day social downtime (no going out) while the skin heals, but the results are worth it.
- Erbium: A very versatile laser. It can be set for superficial or deep fractional settings. This laser will treat deeper wrinkles. Downtime depends on the settings, so a deep treatment can also put you out the social scene for five days.
- Limelight: This is technically not a laser, it is IPL (intense Pulsed Light). This will treat reds and brown spots, and vascular lesions like spider veins. As we age, we start seeing all sorts of “new” unwanted additions to our complexion: freckles, age spots, small blood vessels, etc. These culprits make heavy makeup almost mandatory. This treatment addresses all of these issues, leaving the skin with a vibrant healthy glow.
When shopping for treatments, make sure that you do your research. If the Botox price seems too good to be true it may be either black market (illegal) or, severely diluted (won’t work). Ask what lasers are used, and spend a few minutes looking them up. There are many cheap lasers out there that can cause serious burns. So buyer beware.
