Taking Care of Your Braces During the Holidays

A time of reflection is upon us as the winter holidays approach and 2017 comes to an end. For anyone undergoing orthodontic treatment, day-to-day life may seem somewhat complicated at times but especially during the holidays, when your braces may require some extra attention. If you are considering having your teeth done before the holidays, discuss the cost of braces and what that means for you and your potential treatment with your dentist, you want to keep them clean and safe, so you don’t have to come back afterward and pay to have them re-wired! There are various types of braces so there are different tips and trick to keep them clean, however, with a little extra caution, you can have a festive holiday season and still keep your braces safe and your orthodontic treatment on track. Here are some helpful Pinecrest Orthodontics tips for the holiday season:

  1. Avoid hard and sticky foods. Holiday treats such as candy canes, hard gingerbread cookies, caramel apples, or pecan pie, are off limits as they can break orthodontic appliances. It is important to keep in mind that broken braces or wires can cause discomfort as well as delay treatment progress.
  2. Indulge in the soft stuff! The holidays aren’t ruined just because you cannot eat certain treats. There are many soft and delicious holiday foods that are braces-friendly, such as turkey or ham (off the bone), mashed potatoes, chocolate covered fruits, brownies (without nuts), and pumpkin pie. A warm cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream is another favorite especially on a cool night.
  3. Maintain good oral hygiene. Frequent brushing and flossing is essential, especially after indulging in sweets and particularly when you have braces. Food and plaque that remains trapped around braces can lead to permanent stains on teeth as well as cavities and gum disease. Regular dental cleanings are also critical during orthodontic treatment. Always remember: a clean mouth is a happy mouth!
  4. Stay focused on your goal. While there is some sacrifice involved with orthodontic treatment, bear in mind that it is temporary. Before you know it those braces will be off and you can confidently show off your new beautiful smile. Keep your eye on the prize- a beautiful, healthy smile for a lifetime!

During this holiday season, our team at Pinecrest Orthodontics wants to wish everyone the happiest of holidays and a healthy and prosperous 2018 to come!
